Spinel is a natural cousin of ruby and sapphire, in fact has a very close chemical composition. Spinel is made of magnesium aluminum oxide and ruby is made of aluminum oxide, as is sapphire. The red coloring of both spinel and ruby comes from the same natural element, which is chromium. Spinel and ruby also have very similar luster, density and hardness, as with sapphire.
